The Community Health & Human Services program is designed to help launch students into a multi-disciplinary profession that seeks to prepare professionals to improve the quality of life of individuals, families, groups, and communities; enhance equitable access to services with knowledge in fundamental skills, social justice, and advocacy while providing gateways into employment through a variety of pathways within the program tailored to meet the individual professional and academic goals of each student.
The goals of this program are to:
- Identify the relationship between human needs, values and social conditions from a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural and diverse perspectives.
- Develop interpersonal, analytical, and effective communication skills to employ successful engagement, advocacy and case planning.
- Employ case planning and crisis management for individuals, families, and communities grounded in holistic empowerment and support.
- Identify historical and social contexts to address factors impacting whole-mind-body health within a socioeconomic, psychosocial, behavioral and cultural framework.
- Integrate direct care principles and governing standards that focus on prevention, strength-based programming and the remediation of social issues that maintain a commitment to human rights and social justice.
Successful graduates from this program will be able to:
- Articulate the professional code of ethics and professional standards within the proposed field of study.
- Examine policies, approaches and procedures specific to the delivery of services using a holistic and culturally curious approach.
- Explain human behavior within the context of social, developmental, global, economic, political, biological, and/or environmental systems.
- Gain competencies in assessment, intervention, and evaluation within the scope of case planning, peer facilitation, and trauma informed care principles.
- Identify the range of human diversity and its impact on power, privilege, and oppression within a multidisciplinary lens.
Career Opportunities
Graduates can expect career opportunities in a variety of private and public social service roles such as community outreach worker, case manager, child advocate, social work assistant, social services caseworker, rehabilitation specialist, child welfare worker, gerontology aide, mental health technician, advisement caseworker, youth worker, grant writer, community activist, prevention caseworker, hospital social work assistant, bereavement counselor, and other opportunities.
**The Community Health & Human Services degree program also partners with the Mental Health Association in NYS, Inc., where graduates have an opportunity to take the CarePath ™ Course to become Certified CarePath™ Coaches and become part of the MHANYS, Inc., community.
Transfer Information
While not designed as a transfer program, many of our graduates go on to four-year colleges and specific transfer articulation agreements have been established with SUNY Polytechnic Institute (Psychology or Sociology), Hilbert College (Human Services), SUC at Cortland (Human Services), Utica University (Psychology), and Russell Sage College (Creative Arts Therapy). A student pursuing a degree in this registered program may, after consultation with an academic advisor, select course(s) to prepare for specialization in career or transfer plans.
