The English program offers a comprehensive introduction to key areas of literary study while sharpening students’ writing and communication skills. It is designed to prepare students for advanced study at the baccalaureate level and beyond, and the program is both dynamic and inclusive. It provides a focused pathway for those passionate about the English language and literature, with exposure to the cultural diversity embedded in literary tradition. Its flexible curriculum spans a broad spectrum of English studies, while also allowing students to foster relationships with their classmates and faculty through delving deeper into more specific interests like authors, historical periods, genres, subgenres, and/or stylistic approaches.

The goals of the program are:

  • To educate students on terminology, time periods, genres, styles, and modes of literary study.
  • To refine critical thinking through an emphasis on textual examination and historic context.

Successful graduates from this program will be able to:

  • Examine authors, time periods, and ideas in literature with a focus on the cultural, social, and historical circumstances in which they were produced.
  • Interpret literature by employing literary terms and various theoretical approaches.
  • Produce written work with clarity, purpose, and audience awareness.

Career Opportunities/Transfer Information

Graduates of the program will be prepared to transfer to a four-year institution for continued academic study or to pursue careers across a wide range of fields. Through the development of strong reading, writing, research, analytical, and organizational skills, students will have gained a versatile foundation for numerous professions. Career opportunities include roles in advertising, marketing, content creation, editing, media analysis, publication, public relations, and grant writing. Graduates may also find rewarding career paths in public service, as well as in sectors such as education, healthcare, nonprofit organizations, and private business.
